The Nigerian House of Representatives is to investigate the reported protest by armed mobile police officers in Maiduguri, Borno State..
The police officers were said to have staged the protest on Monday over the non-payment of their allowances and entitlements by the police authorities.
This was contained in a motion under matters of urgent public importance adopted by the House in its plenary on Thursday.
Presenting the Motion, Mr. Kingsley Chinda from Rivers State expressed concern that their action indicates the urgent need for action to avert security crisis.
“We have to do something urgently, if not, we will be responsible for not taking action to prevent the consequences that it may cause the country.” Mr. Chinda said.
Mr Chinda described the development as a national embarrassment, which must be investigated.
He faulted the explanation of the police that late passage of the 2018 budget led to the non-payment of the special duty allowances of the officers.
He argued that “The allowances for personnel on special duties were included in the recurrent expenditure of the 2017 budget.
If cases like the Mauduguri incident were not checked, there was tendency that it can escalate to other places, and other security agencies.”
Mr. Hassan Saleh from Benue State pointed out that the Officers’ action was a pointer to what was happening in the police service.
“Those officers in Maiduguri are the ones that took the courage and risk to protest what was happening in the system.” Saleh explained.
Mr. Aliyu Sani Madaki from Kano State called for the removal of the Inspector General of Police as measure to prevent such incident in the future.
Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, from Abia State cautioned the police authorities against taking any punitive measure on the personnel who partook in the protest.
